Ride of Silence 2026
Roughly 34 people took the time to show up and to honor and remember cyclists who have been injured or killed while riding on public roadways. The event served not only as a tribute to cyclists who can no longer ride, but it also served as a reminder for we cyclists continue to pedal our way through live.  Work still needs to be done to ensure safer roads for all, but as we reflect on this year’s Ride of Silence, let us carry forward its message:  continue to advocate, educate, promote safety, and ride with purpose.

Ian Davidson, Co-Founder of Salem Bike Vision started the evening off by sharing some sobering statistics regarding deaths related in part to bicycle involved injuries and death.

Club President Tim Newman welcomed attendees and invited them to share personal stories.  Personal stories shared reminded us of the risks thrust on us as we pursue our life on two wheels.

Salem Bicycle Club President Tim Newman closed out the event by reading the following Ride of Silence Poem:

"Tonight we number many but ride as one In honor of those not with us, friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, sons With helmets on tight and heads down low, We ride in silence, cautious and slow The wheels start spinning in the lead pack But tonight we ride and no one attacks The dark sunglasses cover our tears Remembering those we held so dear Tonight's ride is to make others aware The road is there for all to share To those not with us or by our side, May God be your partner on your final ride."  - Mike Murgas

Dual Purpose Memorial Day Ride

The Joanne Memorial Ride, observed on Memorial Day, served as a solemn tribute to Joanna Heilinger and as an occasion to remember the service men and women whose sacrifice we also honor. Though the threat of rain reduced what is ordinarily a larger gathering, the significance of the day remained undiminished. Those in attendance carried with them cherished memories of a Salem Bicycle Club member whose dedication contributed immeasurably to the club’s growth and whose remarkable energy left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Joanna did not merely ride among us; she helped lay the course before us. On this Memorial Day, we paused to honor the generosity of spirit, steadfast devotion, and countless miles she gave to the club she helped shape. Her legacy endures in the path we continue to follow, indelibly written into the road beneath our wheels.

The return to McKay Park proved demanding, as high winds met the riders along the way. Yet even amid the challenge, there was a measure of comfort in the fellowship shared and in the welcome stop at EZ Orchards for a Dougie. In the final measure, the day was defined not by the size of the gathering, but by the depth of its remembrance. Joanna’s presence was felt in every mile traveled, in every recollection offered, and in the enduring bonds she leaves with the club she served so faithfully.
